Nerdal Sets Records at Semotion Relays

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Memphis track and field competed at the 27th Annual SEmotion Relays held at the Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex. They recorded record performances and were led by Steffen Nerdal who set a new meet record and school record in the hammer and won the event with a distance of 67.43 meters (221-03), which is an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Nerdal broke a 12-year old record to lead the field.
Susan King placed second in the women's hammer with a launch of 52.70 meters (172-11). Angela Wigley placed seventh with a mark of 37.98 meters (124-07), fouling all but one throw to record a distance.
King later placed first in the shot put and the discus with marks of 16.27 meters (53-04.50) and 45.95 meters (150-09). Sivan Aballi took second in the shot put with a distance of 15.51 meters (50-10.75) and third in the discus with a mark of 45.52 meters (149-04). Both King and Aballi recorded NCAA regional qualifying marks in the shot put.
In the men's shot put senior Glen Edwards led the way with a mark of 16.78 meters (55-00.75) to capture second place. Seth Major and Knut Syversen also faired well in the event finishing with marks of 16.37 meters (53-08.50) and 16.34 meters (53-07.50). Nerdal won the discus with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 51.77 meters (169-10).
On the distance side sophomore Tina Sherrat won the women's 1500 meters and placed third in the 800 meters, crossing the line with times of 4:38.94 and 2:17.42. In the women's 5000 meters Emily Malinowski took fifth place with a time of 18:27.46.
In the 110 hurdles senior Amaechi Oselukwue won the event in a time of 15.03 and placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.85. Freshmen Darius Anderson and Preston Williams placed fourth and fifth in the 110's with times of 15.60 and 15.63, respectively.
Sprinter Jessica Wright placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.97 and third in the 400 meters with a time of 56.34. She also won the long jump with a mark of 5.58 meters (18-03.75).
Jerome Leslie had a personal-best in the triple jump with a leap of 14.80 meters (48-06.75) to take second. Aaron Whetstone placed third with a mark of 14.76 meters (48-05.25). Both Leslie and Andre Hicks had a final jump of 6-02.75 (1.90) in the high jump.
The Tigers are back in action next weekend at the Sea Ray Relays and the Oxford Classic.
