Hanssler Wins Decathlon at the Ole Miss Invite

OXFORD, Miss.-University of Memphis multi-event athlete Luis Hanssler took first place and set a new program-record with 7,365 points in the decathlon, on Sunday, at the Ole Miss Invitational. Hanssler shattered the previous program-best of 6,999 points set by Kevin O’Connell in 1999.
Hanssler placed first in two of the 10 events scoring wins in the 400m (49.38) and long jump (7.49m, 24’7”). In the other eight events, Hanssler took second in the 100m (11.05), tied for fourth in the shot put (12.11m, 39’8.75”), tied for second in the high jump (1.90m, 6’2.75”), took third in the 110m hurdles (15.31), placed fourth in the discus (36.60m, 120’1”), tied for second in the pole vault (4.45m, 14’7.25”), took fifth in the javelin (47.64m, 156’3”) and placed second in the 1,500m (4:36.05).
Hanssler’s mark of 7,365 points ranks 11th on the tfrrs.org 2013 NCAA Dvision I Outdoor Qualifying List and fourth on the 2013 NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
Teammate Tuure Hollo also took sixth in the decathlon with 6,102 points. During the course of the ten event extravaganza, Hollo notched a first place performance in the discus (44.08m, 144’7”). In the other nine events, Hollo placed seventh in the 100m (11.48), took eighth in the 400m (52.67), placed 11th in the long jump (6.15m, 20’2.25”), tied for fourth in the shot put (12.11m, 39’8.75”), tied for second in the high jump (1.90m, 6’2.75”), tied for second in the pole vault (4.45m, 14’7.25”), placed third in the javelin (53.13m, 174’4”) and took seventh in the 1,500m (4:57.55).
Hollo struggled in the 110m recording a DNF. In the pole vault, high jump and shot put, Hanssler and Hollo were actually tied with each other.
