El Paso, Texas - The Memphis Tigers men's and women's outdoor track and field teams kicked off day one of the Conference USA Championships being held in El Paso, Texas.

Sophomore thrower Steffen Nerdal won the men's hammer throw with a toss of 66.36m (217-08), which set a new meet record. Memphis scored 17 points in the hammer alone with Knut Syversen placing fifth (56.30m), Harding Zills seventh (51.02m) and Seth Major eighth (48.65m). Syversen and Zills both had personal-bests in the event.

Freshman heptathlete Preston Williams sits in fifth place after day one of the heptathlon with 3,105 points. He finished fourth in both the high jump and long jump today for his top finishes. Tomorrow he will take on the 110 hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault and 1500 meter run to conclude the heptathlon.

Susan King took second in the women's hammer as she landed a toss of 55.40m (181-09). Her mark was a personal-best and it earned her an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Angela Wigley recorded a personal-best in the event with a distance of 43.52m (142-09).

After day one and two events scored the women's team sits in fourth place with eight points. The men's team has accumulated 17 points after the first day and is in the number two position.
