TUCSON, Ariz. - Steffen Nerdal and Knut Syversen set new personal records as three Tiger throwers used the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic on Saturday to prepare for the NCAA East Regional next weekend.

The Tucson Elite Throwers Classic attracts some of the highest quality of competition in the nation as several former Olympians and U.S. Champions were amongst the competitors on Saturday.

Nerdal uncorked a personal-best throw of 72.04m to finish third in Saturday's competiton. The Norwegian tops his previous personal-best throw by nearly two meters (70.21m). After winning the Conference USA discus throw title last weekend, Nerdal threw the discus for the second time in two weeks to finish 11th in the competition with a throw of 55.17m.

Senior Seth Major finished 13th in the discus throw with a mark of 52.56m. Syversen set a personal-best in the discus throw with a throw of 51.36m to finish 15th. In the shot put, Syversen finished eighth with a mark of 16.31m.

Competition results from the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic do not count toward NCAA qualifications.

Nerdal (hammer and discus throws), Syversen (hammer) and Major (discus throw) will be joined by five other Tiger student-athletes at the NCAA East Regional in Greenville, N.C., slated to begin May 27 at the Irwin Bell Track Complex. Robert Jackson (110m hurdles), Jerome Leslie (high jump), Karlis Pujats (pole vault), Richard Lowe (400m hurdles) and LaShundra Kershaw (100 and 200m dash) will join the three throwers as representatives of the U of M at the NCAA East Regional.
