Williams, Schaly and Bynum Compete on Day Two of the NCAA East Preliminary

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Two Memphis track and field athletes advanced through the NCAA East Preliminary on Friday. Kala Funderburk (400m) and Maya Williamson (400m hurdles) each set new program-records in their qualifying efforts securing spots at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Ore.
In the women's 400m quarterfinal round, Funderburk set a new program-record of 52.59 punching her ticket to Eugene. Funderburk broke her own record set at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship of 52.61.
Williamson set a new program-record of 58.07 in the women's 400m hurdles quarterfinal to advance to NCAA Outdoor Championship. Williamson broke her own record of 58.45 set during the outdoor season at the Ole Miss Invitational.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Brandon Williams just missed advancing through the quarterfinal round. Williams clocked a time of 52.20 finishing 16th overall in his third appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary.
Moving to field events, four Tigers were unable to secure top-12 finishes to advance. Kyle Bynum finished 38th in the men's javelin with a throw of 59.56 (195'5"). In the men's shot put, fellow thrower Yannik Schaly placed 17th with a new personal-best of 17.65m (57'11").
More Tigers will look to qualify on Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary. Andrew Miller will make his attempt to advance in hammer throw at 9 a.m. (CT). The men's triple jump with Manuel Ziegler will follow at 12 p.m. (CT).
Vivian Brandhoff will take to the throwing ring in the women's shot put at 4:30 p.m. (CT). High jumper Georgio Lynwood will look to advance to the national championship for the second-year in a row at 5 p.m. (CT).
Williamson, Funderburk, Monica Mason and Keyona Neal will take to the track in the women's 4 x 400m relay at 8:25 p.m. (CT). Final results from the NCAA East Preliminary will be posted on GoTigersGo.com.
