Memphis Cross Country Teams Run at Memphis Twilight Meet
Sept. 14, 2008
Memphis, Tenn. – The Memphis men’s and women’s cross country team competed in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Meet tonight. In the women’s race that took place first, the Lady Tigers took 20th place. In the men’s 8k race that followed, the Memphis men took 14th place. Emily Malinowski was the first finisher for the Lady Tigers in the 5k race crossing the finish line with a time of 20:40.48. Just over a minute later, freshman Jasmine Darden clocked in at 21:41.58. For the men’s squad, Jacob Chapman logged a top 50 finish with a time of 27:06.30 landing him in 47th place. Edwin Kipkorir followed shortly in 53rd place logging a time of 27:28.47. Memphis distance coach Toby Reep was not overly impressed by his team’s finish in the meet, but looks to improve in the coming weeks. “We still have a lot of work to do because it’s early in the season,” Reep said. “Things just didn’t go the way we wanted them to go tonight. We’re just going to really go back to work this week. I know we’re really fatigued from the work outs we have been putting them through and this meet will serve as a work out for us. In the long run, this will just help us to progress in the direction that we want to go.” Both cross country teams will be in action next weekend on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
