Men's Cross Country Takes First at Rhodes Invite

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-University of Memphis cross country squads returned to action at the Rhodes College Invitational, on Saturday. The men's team placed first overall in the 8K, with the women taking third in the 6K.

The men placed first of 27 teams scoring 30 points on the 8K course. Central Arkansas placed second with 99 points followed by Center in third with 108 points.

Dan Kuhman (25:07) and James Maglasang (25:26) were the top-two finishers for the men, with Kuhman taking second and Maglasang crossing the line fourth. Fabian Fiege (25:57, seventh), Aidan Galasso (26:21, eighth), Julien Wolf (26.23, ninth), Drew Austell (26:29, 11th) and Austin Carter (26:48, 12th) rounded out the Memphis top seven.

"On the men's side it was a pretty dominating performance," cross country/distance coach Doug Clark said. "We packed really well. James Maglasang and Daniel Kuhman did a really good job up front, now we are getting the rest of the guys up closer to them. I think that if we are going to be competitive at the conference and at regional that's what we are going to have to do."

The women's squad finished third of 25 teams scoring 118 points on the 6K course. Arkansas State took first with 43 points with Central Arkansas taking second at 98 points.

Martina Rodriguez (22:36) and Jenny Johnston (23:18) were the top-two finishers for the women, with Rodriguez taking sixth and Johnston taking 12th. Alisha Fitch (23.30, 18th), Meagan Nichols (23:50, 26th), Taylor Kriha (24:50, 56th), Nandia Taylor (25:01, 60th) and Lauren Berry (25:07, 64th) rounded out Memphis' top seven.

"With the women, we kind of knew that UCA and Arkansas State were a litter better than us," Clark said. "We felt like if we could come in here an pack pretty well we could finish third and we did. I was very happy with that."

The first place finish by the men was their third-in-a-row at the Rhodes College Invitational; the women's third place finish was their third top-five at the meet in the last three seasons.
