JONESBORO, Ark. - Track and field returns home with 38 top-10 finishes, in their first indoor meet of the season. Both the men's and women's teams competed at the ASU Kickoff Klassic that was held today at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center. Senior Susan King led the pack as she won both the shot put and weight throw, qualifying for nationals and the Olympic trials in the shot.

King topped the throws as she threw 17.13 meters (56-02.50) in the shot put and 18.42 meters (60-05.25) in the weight throw, for two first place finishes. She beat Gail Lee's previous indoor record of 17.11 meters (56-01.75) that was set at the conference indoor championships last season. Sivan Aballi took home second in the shot with 15.79 meters (51-09.75) and third in the weight throw with 15.31 meters (50-02.75). Angela Wigley placed fourth in the weight throw with 14.24 meters (46-08.75).

LaShundra Kershaw placed fourth in the 55m dash, tallying a time of 7.10. Jessica Wright brought home a fifth place showing in the 400m, crossing the line in 57.75 and a sixth place leap in the long jump with, 5.46 meters (17-11.25) Tina Sherratt took down second place in the mile run with a time of 5:03.05.

In the 55m hurdles, Eryka Morris, Lhayana Dallas and Charlotte Abrahamsen all qualified for the finals taking fifth, sixth and eighth. Abrahamsen also recorded a second place height in the high jump with 1.72 meters (5-08) and a fourth place showing in the long jump with 5.59 meters (18-04.25). Gaylon Muhammad jumped 11.11 meters (36-05.75) in the triple jump for fourth place.

 

 

The pole vaulting duo of Ashton Baldwin and Whitney Bolton reigned supremative as they both leaped to a height of 3.76 meters (12-04). Due to the amount of attempts taken at each height, Baldwin captured first and Bolton took down second. The duo jumped eight inches (.25 meters) higher than their next competitor.

On the men's side, Frashod Barlow qualified for the 55 meter finals, crossing the line in a time of 6.49. Sam James ran a time of 1:59.11 in the 800 meters, placing ninth overall. Jacob Chapman recorded a time of 9:34.07 in the 3000 meters.

The trio of Preston Williams, Amaechi Oselukwue and Darius Anderson all qualified for the 55 meter hurdle finals. Williams wrapped up second place with a time of 7.77, with Oselukwue and Anderson right behind with 7.82 and 7.92.

In the jumps, Andre Hicks had a height of 1.93 meters (6-04) in the high jump. Jerome Leslie recorded 1.87 meters (6-02) in the high jump, 6.71 meters (22-00.25) in the long jump and 13.89 meters (45-07) in the triple, recording top ten finishes in all three events. Aaron Whetstone placed third in the triple jump with 14.63 meters (48-00) and fifth in the long jump with 6.75 meters (22-01.75). Brian Prackett recorded a height of 4.26 meters (14-0) in the pole vault, good enogh for eighth place.

The men dominated the throws having Glen Edwards, Knut Syversen, Seth Major and Greg Norrid all throw 15 meters or higher in the shot put placing all of them in the top seven. Edwards placed third in the shot with 16.89 meters (55-05). Syversen, Edwards, Major and Harding Zills also faired well in the weight throw, placing in the top eight with Syversen leading the pack with a throw of 17.16 meters (56-03.75) in third place.

"Considering how early in the season it is, the team did fantastic," said head coach Kevin Robinson. "The new athletes did a great job today. The performer of the meet has to go to Susan(King). She beat Gail's (Lee) indoor shot record and qualified for both nationals and the Olympic trials."
