Tiger Track and Field Prepared for First Meet of 2012
Jan. 11, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After a lengthy Christmas break, the U of M Track and Field Teams return to action Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. at the Blazer Invitational. The two day event, hosted by Conference USA rival UAB, will be held in the newly constructed site of the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championships, the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The event marks the second meet on the Tiger's indoor season, following the ASU Kickoff Classic in December 2011. Participating teams in the Blazer Invitational include host school UAB, Mississippi State, and the University of Alabama among others.
"Birmingham is in our own backyard", said head coach Kevin Robinson. "So basically it's a home meet for us and that's really exciting."
For the Tigers, it is a chance for the coaching staff to evaluate where the program stands competitively after a long break. Additionally, the meet provides a young Tiger squad the opportunity to build on a strong start at the ASU Kickoff Classic, in which new team records were set.
Among those looking to capitalize on a fast start to the season is freshman sprinter Kala Funderburk. In her first meet donning the Blue and Gray, Funderburk broke the program's all-time indoor record in the 400m dash (56.09). The mark was previously held by Jessica Wright (56.97). Funderburk then teamed with Mya Williams, Keyona Neal, and Monica Mason to break the program's all-time indoor 4x400m record (3:50.74).
In men's competition Taurean Nixon and Karlis Pujats will look to climb in the national standings as both are ranked in the USTFCCCA's pre-season indoor event rankings. Nixon was scored as 38th in the nation in the men's 60m, while Pujats was scored as ninth in the pole vault. Nixon was previously scored 41st in 2011.
Action is slated to start at Blazer Invitational on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Results for the event will be posted on gotigersgo.com as they are made available.
