Jan. 17, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Memphis track and field program opens the indoor season, Saturday, at the Illini Classic. Returning with veteran men's and women's teams, the Tigers look to build on a strong 2013 campaign that saw Memphis reach new heights in team and individual competition.
"I think we have a high quality team for both the men and women," head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. "The number one thing I'm really looking for is us going up there and competing hard. It's our first meet of the year. I'm anxious to see how we compete this weekend; our competitive maturity is the thing I'm really looking for this weekend."
The Illini Classic is scheduled for one day, Saturday, at the Armory on the campus of the University of Illinois. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. (CT) with track events beginning at 10 a.m. (CT). Complete results from the meet will be posted on GoTigersGo.com as they are made available.
On the women's side, the Tigers return four All-Conference performers. For the men, nine All-Conference performers return to the fold of a senior laden squad.
The program as a whole, is coming off one of the most successful indoor/outdoor campaign in head coach Kevin Robinson's tenure. During 2013 Indoor competition, the women's program posted its highest finish ever at the conference championship, placing second at the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Championship.
In outdoor competition, the Tigers qualified a combined program-record of 19 athletes for the NCAA postseason. A total of 18 athletes (eight women, 10 men) represented Memphis at the NCAA East Preliminary with seven athletes advancing to the NCAA Championship, where six Tigers earned All-America distinctions.
