Busby Wins Triple Jump; Sets New Personal Best Mark
Jan. 21, 2005
Carbondale, Ill. - Janon Busby was the top University of Memphis finisher on the first day of the Saluki Booster Invitational, as he won the triple jump, and set a new personal best mark with a leap of 15.09m. Two other Tigers grabbed top-four spots on the first day of the two-day event, with Brandon Winbush claiming third in the triple jump and J.D. Erickson taking fourth in the weight throw.
Busby's leap of 15.09m broke his previous best mark of 15.06m, which he set in junior college, and outdistanced second place finisher, Roy Harris of Arkansas State by nearly a meter. Winbush's mark of 14.03m was good enough for third place in the event and was just a tenth of a meter behind Harris.
Erickson's fourth place tally in the weight throw was the only other top-ten finish for the U of M, as he recorded a mark of 18.19m. A pair of Memphis throwers did claim 11th place tallies as Norbert Gulyas was 11th in the men's weight with a mark of 14.45m and Annette Uzoh was 11th in the women's weight throw with a mark of 11.56m.
Lisa-Marie Hyman, who will compete for the U of M in the outdoor season, but is competing as unattached for indoor meets, claimed the women's triple jump title with a leap of 12.28m.
Only five events, the men's and women's triple jump and weight throw and the men's pole vault, were part of Friday's slate. All other events will be held Saturday, with competition set to begin at 8:30 a.m. at Southern Illinois University's Student Recreation Center.
