Jan. 25, 2005
Irving, Texas - University of Memphis junior thrower Gail Lee has been named the Conference USA Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for January 16-23, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Lee, a transfer from Barton Community College who was competing in her first meet for the U of M, made her Memphis debut in style as she provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and broke the school record in the shot put. Her toss of 16.04m (52-7.5") at this weekend's Saluki Booster Invitational broke the previous record of 14.03m by over two meters or more than six and a half feet and gave her a third place finish in the event. Lee also placed fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 17.37m (57-0").
With her honor, Lee becomes the first Lady Tiger track and field athlete to be named C-USA Women's Athlete of the Week since, former athlete and present assistant coach Keenan Gibson took home the award on April 17, 2001.
Beyond Lee's performances, the U of M track squads also had a number of other top performances at the Booster Invitational. For the Lady Tigers, jumper Chen Edri and distance runner Daniele Riendeau broke school records and won event titles in the high jump and 3000m with marks of 1.72m (5-7.75") and 10:12.77, respectively.
On the men's side, senior Daniel Kiss provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.34s, while fellow senior Janon Busby won the triple jump and set a personal best with a leap of 15.09m (49-6.25").
The U of M track squads will look to continue their success in two weeks as they head to back to Carbondale, Ill., for the McDonald's Invitational.
