IRVING, Texas - Sophomore pole vaulter Karlis Pujats has been named this week's Men's Indoor Athlete of the Week, as announced, Tuesday, by the conference office.

Pujats bettered his former school-record indoor pole vault mark of 5.21m (17-1'') at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, Ky., winning the event with a 5.36m (17-7'') mark. In addition to being the top height in Conference USA this season by more than a foot, the sophomore's vault over the weekend ties him for fourth in the NCAA and puts him less than six inches away from the NCAA Championship's automatic qualifying standard of 5.50m (18-0.50'').

He is also just four centimeters away from qualifying to represent his native Latvia at the European Championships.

This is the first career Indoor Athlete of the Week accolade for Pujats. It's the first award for a Tiger track and field competitor this season, and is the first since Steffen Nerdal was named Outdoor Athlete of the Week, April 20, 2010.

Pujats and the rest of the Tigers return to action this weekend, at the SIU McDonald's Invite in Carbondale, Ill., beginning Friday.
