PHILADELPHIA --- -
Head Coach Glenn Hays thought the 4x100-meter relay team he was taking to the prestigious Penn Relays was one of the best ones he has ever taken and the Tigers proved him right, Friday, when they won their heat of the 4x100-meter relay to advance to the finals of the College Division 4x100-meter relays.
The relay team of Ivan Williams,
Franck Diadhiou, Von Webb and Larry Crawford won the fourth heat of the 4x100 in 40.55 seconds, beating North Carolina A&T, Clemson, Miami (FL), Penn State, Turabo (Puerto Rico), Pittsburgh, Connecticut and West Virginia in their heat. The competition gets even stiffer with Saturday's 1 p.m. (EDT), final. The Tigers will run against Mississippi, Louisiana State, South Carolina, Texas Christian, Tennessee, Auburn and Middle Tennessee State, Saturday, in the College Men's Division of the 4x100-meter Championship of America. Texas Christian had the fastest qualifying time with a 38.84-second effort.
The 4x200-meter relay team also advanced to the finals, finishing third in the
fastest heat of the relay and taking the last 4x200-meter finals slot with
their time of 1:23.95. The 4x200-meter finals will be Saturday, at 2:45 p.m. (EDT).
The Tiger 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth in its heat behind Auburn,
Oklahoma, Seton Hall and St. Augustine's, failing to advance to either of the
finals, Saturday. The relay crossed the line in 3:13.25.
The Tigers also teamed together to form a sprint medley relay, an event that
Memphis only runs at the Penn Relays. The Tigers finished 41st in the sprint
medley in 3:31.35.
The Tigers will wrap up the Memphis schedule, Saturday, in the finals in the
4x100 and 4x200.
