Tigers Ranked in Top 15 of USTFCCCA South Region

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- In the final United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region Index, both Tiger track and field squads garnered a top-15 ranking to close out the 2012 outdoor season. Memphis men ranked 10th, while the women returned to rankings at number 15. In the USTFCCCA South Region Event Index, six Tigers finished the season ranked in the top-eight. Freshman Fabian Fiege ranked seventh in the 800m run with his season best of 1:49.83. Sophomore Darius Lynwood took seventh in the high jump with his personal-record leap of 2.18m (7'1.75"). Throwers Will Hubber and Kyle Bynum found their way onto the final regional ranking. Hubber ranked sixth in the hammer throw with his personal-best toss of 58.68m (192'6"). Bynum's school-record and Conference USA gold medal winning javelin throw of 70.27m (230'6") landed the freshman at number four. Marc Klaschka returned to the regional rankings for the first time since the indoor track and field season. Klaschka's C-USA silver medal performance of 6,636 points in the decathlon earned the freshman a number-six ranking. Fellow multi-event specialist Xenia Rahn finished the season ranked fifth for the women in the heptathlon with her C-USA Championship winning performance of 5,325 points. The outdoor track and field post-season gets underway May 24 with the NCAA Preliminary round. Several Tigers could have the opportunity to represent the Blue and Gray at the NCAA East Preliminary hosted this year by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Last season Memphis track and field squads set a program record by sending 14 student-athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary.
