Memphis, Tenn. -- - University of Memphis sophomore track and field athlete Delvit Rogers (Memphis, TN/Raleigh Egypt) left Tuesday to compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championships which begin Wednesday at Duke University.

Rogers opens his competition schedule at 6:30 p.m. (EST), Wednesday, in the trials of the men's long jump, where he is ranked fifth. Arkansas senior Melvin Lister is seeded first with a previous best mark of 8.49 meters. Mississippi junior Savante Stringfellow is second with a best of 8.30 meters and Alabama junior Miguel Pate is third with an 8.26 meter best mark.

Rogers will have a day to recover before beginning competition in the triple jump at 5:30 p.m. (EST), Friday. The sophomore is ranked 10th in the triple jump with a previous best mark of 8.07 meters.

Rogers set two school records in the 2000 outdoor season. He posted a school record of 8.07 meters (26-5.75 feet) in the long jump at the LSU meet on April 15th, which automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championships. The old school record was 25-8, set by Terdell Middleton in 1976.

En route his Conference USA Championship in the triple jump at New Orleans, the sophomore rewrote another school record, with a mark of 16.32 meters (53-6.50 feet). The old record was 53-6.25 feet, set by Reuben Fairfax in 1974.

Rogers will have plenty of familiar competition at the NCAA Championships. Charlotte will send senior Rephel Martin and sophomore Will Montgomery, who finished one-two in the long jump at the outdoor championships ahead of Rogers. Martin finished second, behind Rogers, in the triple jump.

The championships begin with the women's hammer throw at 11 a.m, Wednesday and concludes with the women's 4 x 100 at 9:30 p.m., Saturday.
