Nemeth Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 3000 Meter Steeplechase
May 31, 2003 COLUMBUS, OHIO - Junior Mate Nemeth became the second Memphis track and field athlete to qualify for the NCAA National Championships with his third place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase, Saturday. Nemeth finished third behind Arkansas' Dan Lincoln and Eastern Michigan's Jordan Desilets. Lincoln led the charge in 8:37.56, followed by Deilets in 8:48.27. Nemeth finished third in 8:49.30, followed by Isaiah Festa from Wisconsin in 8:54.43. Kent State's Peter Weisz rounded out the top five qualifiers with his time of 8:57.52. Nemeth and Gaute Myklebust will represent Memphis at the NCAA Championships that take place in Sacramento, Calif., June 11-17, 2003.
On the women's side, junior Lisa-Marie Hyman finished 11th in the triple jump, Saturday. Hyman's best mark of 12.58 meters (41-3.25) put her in 11th place out of 32 competitors. LSU's Nicole Toney won the event with a mark of 13.58 meters (44-6.75), while Ball State's Patricia Soman finished second with a 13.43 meter effort (44-00.75). Illinois' Nicole Whitman was third with a 13.32 meter (43-8.50) effort, while Ohio State's Shayla Moore was fourth with a 13.11-meter mark (43-00.25). Kentucky's Simidele Adeagbo was the final national qualifier with a 13.08 meter mark (42-11).
