Myklebust Named C-USA Scholar-Athlete
June 4, 2004 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior men's thrower Gaute Myklebust (Sand, Norway) was named a second team honoree on the Co-SIDA Academic All-District IV ballot, Friday. The senior was also named the Conference USA Men's Track and Field Co-Scholar Athlete Award Winner. He shares the C-USA award with TCU's Michael Frater. Myklebust, who will be one of two Tigers competing at the NCAA Championships beginning Wednesday, was a Conference USA Male Co-Athlete of the Year and won the Mid-East Regional discus crown to qualify for the championship meet.P> Holding school records in both the discus and the shot, Myklebust earned the academic honor after posting a 3.62 GPA in business this past season. The senior thrower is seeded fifth for the upcoming NCAA Championships, with a season-best throw of 60.85 meters. A two-time league Male Athlete of the Year and a double medallist in both the discus and the shot in his two seasons in Memphis, Myklebust transferred to Memphis from SIU-Carbondale, following current Tiger assistant coach Kevin Robinson back to Robinson's alma mater.
The upcoming NCAA Championships will be Myklebust's second straight NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance. He finished 15th in the shot and 14th in the discus at last year's championships in Sacramento, Calif. This year's NCAA Championship meet will be hosted by the University of Texas-Austin.
