MEMPHIS, TENN. -
Sophomore Aaron Whetstone earned a spot in the 2009 NCAA Track and Field Championship and will represent the Tigers in the triple jump. The meet, which is being hosted by the University of Arkansas, will be held at John McDonnell Field, June 10-13.
Whetstone will compete on Friday at 4:30 p.m. If he places in the top 12 in the qualifying round, he advances to the final, which will be held at noon on Saturday. CBS College Sports will be broadcasting from the championship on Friday from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. CBS Sports picks up coverage of the finals on Saturday from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. The meet will also be available live and free through internet streaming.
Whetstone earned a spot in the championship after being selected from an at-large pool of competitors based on his high mark of 15.90 m (52-02.00) in the triple jump, which he recorded at the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships. He is the 15th Tiger under coach Kevin Robinson to compete at the NCAA Championship.
"This is Aaron's first trip to the National Championship and he is excited to be there," said Robinson. "He is a great competitor and belongs in this group. If he can get on the board, he can compete with anyone in the country."
A native of Carlisle, Pa., Whetstone is one of 40 student-athletes representing Conference USA this weekend.
