Nerdal Earns Second-Straight C-USA Spirit of Service Award
June 16, 2010
IRVING, Texas – University of Memphis senior thrower Steffen Nerdal added a second Conference USA Spirit of Service Award to his array of awards earned during his career as announced by the league office on Wednesday. The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's spring sports: baseball, softball, rowing, tennis and outdoor track and field. The Bergen, Norway native volunteered at the Children’s Museum of Memphis in October 2008 prior to the presidential election. He helped explain the importance of voting to the children. He also participated in the “Read to Succeed” program at the Lipman School in Memphis. He also helped the track and field squad in the annual SAAC canned food drive. During the summer, Nerdal volunteers his time as a volunteer track coach in Norway. He works directly with kids in his hometown to help develop their athletic ability. During his Memphis career, Nerdal has been a member of the Tiger 3.0 club for four semesters. Nerdal has been named to the Dean’s List and was also named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team in 2008. He graduated with a 3.43 grade-point average, with a degree in business administration and a minor in finance.
The eight-time C-USA Champion hauled in his third C-USA hammer throw championship at the 2010 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning C-USA Performance of the Meet. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships last week, the senior earned his fourth-straight All-America honor after finishing fourth with a toss of 68.86-meters (225-11). Nerdal holds the school records in the hammer and weight throws and is the only track and field athlete to be a four-time All-American. 2009-10 SPRING C-USA SPIRIT OF SERVICE HONOREES (*repeat winners):
