MEMPHIS, Tenn.-The University of Memphis men's and women's track and field teams earned several academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) the organization announced on Wednesday.

“I am very pleased to see this program honored with another host of academic awards,” head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. “Having eight athletes to receive this honor is a great achievement. Having both the track and field teams honored as well is just as gratifying. I am very proud of a team that can not only compete at a very high level on the track, but also be recognized for their successes in the classroom. This marks the third year in a row in which both cross country teams, as well as both track teams, have been given the USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction. I am very proud of this group”

The men's and women's teams each earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. The women's squad posted a team GPA of 3.58, earning the academic honor, with the men's squad posting a team GPA of 3.17. Both teams earned the honor for the third year in a row. Teams attain USTFCCCA All-Academic Team status by maintaining a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher.

The Tigers also earned several individual awards. Luis Hanssler (decathlon), Fabian Fiege ( 800m), Luke Vaughn (discus) and Yannik Schaly (shot put) each earned USTFCCCA Men’s All-Academic individual honors, tying the program-record of four selections.

Hanssler carried a GPA of 3.84 majoring in International Business. Fiege earned a 3.80 GPA majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Vaughn notch a GPA of 3.59 with a Business Management major. Schaly posted a 3.32 GPA in International Business. For Schaly and Hanssler, it was their second year in a row to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction.

On the women’s side, Sabrina Hochreuther (pole vault), Vivian Brandhoff (shot put), Clara Amat-Fernandez (pole vault) and Carolina Carmichael (pole vault) earned USTFCCCA Women’s All-Academic individual honors.

Hochreuther posted a 3.97 GPA majoring in criminal justice. Brandoff, a Sport and Leisure Management major, earned a 3.92 GPA. Amat-Fernandez carried a GPA of 3.65 majoring in Exercise and Sports Science. Carmichael recorded a GPA of 3.25 majoring in Sport and Leisure Management. For Hochreuther, Brandhoff and Amat-Fernandez, it was their second year in a row to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
