MEMPHIS, TENN.- The University of Memphis men's and women's track and field teams each were named to the 2012 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Teams, Thursday. The announcement came on the heels of four Tigers that received individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

The women's squad tallied a cumulative team grade point average of 3.28, which is tied for 23rd among the 171 programs that received All-Academic Teams status. Additionally, it was announced Wednesday that Monica Mason, Laura Toldy and Cyarra Wells each received individual All-Academic honors for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2012 track and field season.

"I am extremely excited that our women's team was able to accomplish this honor," head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. "Not only is this team the most competitive women's team that we have fielded on the track, but also the most successful in the classroom as well. The drive and dedication of this group is extraordinary. We need to now be ready to improve again next year."

The men's team recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.14m, which tied for 25th among the 85 schools that earned All-Academic status. Sophomore Tom Willcox took home individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors on Tuesday of this week. The honors are a culmination of hard work both on and off the field of competition since Kevin Robinson took over as head coach in 2006.

"I am so proud of the men's team for this accomplishment, we are coming off a season in which we sent a record number of athletes to the NCAA regional championship on the track, and now this same team has been recognized with this prestigious academic honor," Robinson said. "When the teams were merged into one program in 2006, the men's team was on academic probation with the NCAA. Now we are in the top 25 academically, that speaks volumes for the progress that has been made. I feel that we are finally realizing some of the potential of this program."

To achieve USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Teams status the squad must earn a GPA of 3.00 or better. For more information on the University of Memphis track and field program and all Tigers-athletics please visit GoTigersGo.com.
