Tigers set to Kickoff Cross Country Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-University of Memphis cross country squads kickoff the 2013 season, Saturday, at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The women's team will take to the 5K course at 9:40 p.m. (CT), with the men following at 10:20 p.m. (CT) on the 4 mile course.

The men's team returns all seven of their top runners that posted the program's highest finish ever at the NCAA South Regional Championship (ninth) and the program's highest finish ever in their final Conference USA Championship (fourth). Tigers return two 2012 All-Conference USA Performers in seniors James Maglasang and junior Daniel Kuhman. Kuhman also earned 2012 All-South Region honors in placing 24th as the at the 2012 NCAA South Region Championship. The Tigers added two newcomers to the fold in junior-transfer Austell Drew and freshman Jacob Ryan.

On the women's side, Memphis returns all but one runner, from a squad, which in 2012, posted a team win at the Rhodes College Invitational for the second-straight year. Seniors Alisha Fitch, Jenny Johnston, Meagan Nichols and Nandia Taylor will lead the squad during the program's first season in the American Athletic Conference.

The Tigers added three newcomers to the women's roster. Freshman Lauren Berry, Phoebe Bauer, Claire Cash and Martina Rodriguez will don the Blue and Gay for the first time in 2013. The men's and women's freshmen classes will bolster the rosters of two highly experienced teams that have shown steady improvement under cross country coach Doug Clarks tutelage.

The 2013 Schedule
The Tigers, once again, will attack another strong schedule of meets in 2013. The event line-up is highlighted by two local meets beginning first with Saturday's Brooks Twilight Classic. The second local meet will be the Rhodes Invitational (Sept. 28), an event the men and women have swept team wins two seasons in a row.

Memphis will hit the trails at three other meets as they prepare for the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship set for Nov. 2 in Storrs, Conn. On Sept. 14, the Tigers travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the Vanderbilt Invitational. Following the aforementioned Rhodes Invitational, the squads will the run at the Chili Pepper Invitational (Fayetteville, Ark.) on Oct. 5 and the Pre-NCAA Championship (Terre Haute, Ind.) on Oct. 19. The NCAA South Regional Championship (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) is set for Nov. 15 with the NCAA Championship (Terre Haute, Ind.) following on Nov. 23.

What the Tigers Did a Year Ago at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic
Following a weather delay and grueling conditions, Memphis cross country teams picked-up two top-ten overall finishes at the 2012 Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic.

Memphis men took fourth place out of 21 teams overall on the four mile course, with two Tigers recording top-10 finishes. James Maglasang took sixth with a time of 20:48.85. Daniel Kuhman finished seventh just behind Maglasang, with a time of 20:53.68. Aidan Galasso (22:19.09) and Stephen Tankersley (22:19.17) had the next two best finishes for the Tigers placing 48th and 49th respectively.

Memphis women finished seventh out of 21 teams overall on the 5K course, with one individual top-10 finish. Louisa Lingley placed ninth with a time of 19:06.24. Jenny Johnston (20:35.66) and Alisha Fitch (20:46.46) had the next two highest finishes at 51st and 55th respectively.

Following the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic, U of M cross country squads will return to action on Sept. 14 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
