Cross Country Heads to Commordore Classic
Sept. 15, 2011 MEMPHIS - For the second meet of the season, the University of Memphis cross county teams will head to Nashville, Tenn., where they will compete at Percy Warner Park in the Vanderbilt University Commodore Classic this Saturday, Sept. 17. The men's 8000m race will be first at 8:45 a.m., followed by the women's 5000m at 9:30 a.m. CT. "This will be another good test for both teams," cross country coach Doug Clark said. "We've had a couple of good weeks of training under our belts since the Memphis Twilight and the cooler weather will be conducive to faster times." The fields will consist of approximately 24 teams, making it the largest in the invite's history. It will also boast several schools from the NCAA South Region that the Tigers could see again in the post-season, including four regionally-ranked men's teams: Alabama (4th), Chattanooga (5th), Belmont (6th), Lipscomb (12th) and Middle Tennessee (15th), along with two women's team, Alabama (7th) and Lipscomb (7th). "The opportunity to compete against ranked teams from our region will give us a better opportunity to see where we stand." Coach Clark said. "I believe this will be the first ever 8000m for all of our freshmen men, but again the cooler temps should help with the transition from the four-mile race at Memphis Twilight to 8000m at Vanderbilt." In their last outing, the Tigers had two runner finish in the top ten in the men's four-mile event, freshman Daniel Kuhman crossed the line sixth with his time of 20:20.25 and sophomore James Maglasang was just behind with a 20:26.05 time landing him in eighth place. Junior Louisa Lingley was the U of M women's top individual finisher in the 5k with a personal-best 19:10.76. These top individual finishes helped secure a sixth-place team finish for the men and eighth-place for the women. 2011 Vanderbilt Invite Registered Teams
