Tiger Cross Country Teams Snag a Pair of Seventh-Place Finishes
Sept. 17, 2011
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Both the men's and women's cross country teams notched a seventh-place finish on Saturday at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University.
"We headed into this weekend knowing there was great competition and wanting to know where we stand," cross country coach Doug Clarksaid following the meet. "The men were six points shy of sixth place, and both squads beat Marshall, so I think we have a good sense of how we compare to the other teams in the conference and region."
Freshman Daniel Kuhman led the way once again for the Tigers with the highest individual finish. The Elyria, Ohio native crossed the line with a 25:26 time in the 8k earning him seventh place, his second top 10 finish in two meets as a Tiger. Sophomore James Maglasang finished with a 25:44 to capture 15th place and freshman Julien Wolfwas third for the Blue and Gray, coming in 50th with a 26:55 mark.
"Dan and James are doing great as the one-two punch," Coach Clark said. "We just really have to close the gap between the second and third guy. The women pack well, we just need to move the pack up."
Junior Louisa Lingley led the pack for the second-straight meet, securing 28th place with a time of 18:55 in the women's 5k. Sophomore Alisha Fitch was three seconds behind with an 18:58, placing her 31st, while fellow sophomore Jenny Johnstonrounded out the top three individuals with a 19:16 and 43rd-place finish.
"They're running a little fatigued," Coach Clark said of both Memphis squads. "But we have to push and train through it and be ready for conferences Oct. 31."
The Tigers will have two weeks to recover and train before their next outing back in the Bluff City. The U of M will run in the Rhodes Invitational at Shelby Farms (Gate 8) on Saturday, Oct. 1. The women's 6k race will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT with the men's 8k to follow at 10:15 a.m. CT.
