Memphis Cross Country Readies for NCAA South Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-University of Memphis cross country squads will hit the trails at the NCAA Cross Country South Regional Championship, on Friday. The men's 10K race will begin at 10:00 a.m. (CT) followed by the Women's 6K race at 11:15 a.m. (CT).

The event, hosted by the University of Alabama, will be run at the Harry Prichett Running Park. The host site will be familiar to some of the Memphis runners, as the team competed at the South Regional the last time it was hosted there in 2011.

The men's 10K includes 27 teams, with 237 athletes entered. The women's 6K includes 35 teams, with 255 athletes entered. Results from the event will posted on GoTigersGo.com as they are made available.

What the Tigers Did a Year Ago at the NCAA South Regional
At the 2012 NCAA South Region Championship the men placed ninth, an all-time program best at the event. Daniel Kuhman was the top finisher for the men placing 24th with a time of 31:18.90. For his performance Kuhman took home All-Region honors.

James Maglasang was second for the men finishing 37th at a time of 31:51.50. Austin Carter (32:33.70), Julien Wolf (32:38.40), Fabian Fiege (32:46.70) finished 68th, 73rd and 82nd respectively. Aidan Galasso (33:10.80) and Stephen Tankersley (35:05.40) rounded out the field for the men finishing 102nd and 140th.

In the women's 6K, Louisa Lingley was the top finisher in 70th place with a time of 21:38.80. Nandia Taylor was second for the women in 85th with a time of 21:54.10. Jenny Johnston (22:12.30), Alisha Fitch (22:18.90) and Meagan Nichols (23:02.30) rounded out the filed for the women finishing 107th, 111th and 143rd respectively.

The Tigers Return to the USTFCCCA'S South Region Standings
Following a strong performance at the American Athletic Conference Championship, the Memphis men's squad returned to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Teams Rankings checking in at No. 13 in the latest poll (11/4).

The men return to the top-15 after not being ranked in the organization's previous poll. The Tigers No. 13 ranking matches their regular season highest ranking in 2013. Memphis came into the season ranked 11th in the preseason poll.

Last Time Out
The Tigers last competed at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship. The men's squad placed third (77 points), with the women taking seventh (173 points) overall.

The Memphis men's top seven runners all clocked a time less than 25 minutes on the 8K course. Senior James Maglasang and junior Dan Kuhman were the top-two finishers with Maglasang taking third (23:32.03) and Kuhman finishing 11th (24:02.56). Each earned All-American Athletic Conference honors for their top-15 performances.

Fabian Fiege (16th, 24:28.17), Austin Carter (22nd,24.37.29), Julien Wolf (25th, 24:41.71), Aidan Galasso (28th, 24:47.98) and Drew Austell (30th, 24:52.99) rounded out the Memphis men's top seven. Louisville (28 points) took the American Men's Cross Country Championship, with Cincinnati (75) taking second. The field included eight teams with a total of 67 runners.

The third-place performance was the program's highest finish since the Tigers won the 1976 Metro Conference title. Maglasang's third-place finish was the best by a Tiger since Mate Nemeth won the C-USA title in 2004.

The Memphis women ran a strong race on the 6K course. Freshman Martina Rodriguez was the top Tigers-runner taking 15th in a time of 21:27.01 earning All-American Conference honors. Rodriguez's 15th-place performance was the best by a Lady Tiger since Danielle Riendeau was sixth in 2005 (C-USA).

Jenny Johnston (32nd, 22:25.43), Alisha Fitch (33rd, 22:28.90), Nandia Taylor (43rd, 23:09.04), Meagan Nichols (50th, 23:39.51), Taylor Kriha (51st, 23:52.99) and Claire Cash (56th, 24:09.91) rounded out the Memphis women's top-seven.
