UAB Shoots Down Lady Tigers
Feb. 2, 2006 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Shooting 53.3 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from three-point range and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line, the UAB Blazers shot down the Lady Tiger basketball team 101-60, Thursday night despite a career-high 29 points from junior Devin Necaise. Memphis struggled underneath early in the first half, getting out-rebounded 12-5 in the opening eight minutes and getting whistled for seven fouls, six of them coming while contesting shots or scrambling for a defensive rebound. Memphis, who finished the first half out-rebounded 32-17, did manage to get some offense, but could not keep up with a UAB team that scored 17 points at the free-throw line in the first half on 20 attempts. At the half, Memphis had two players with three fouls, Ashley Howard and Sherika Montgomery, and had been whistled for 13 first half fouls, compared to six for UAB. To start the second half, UAB went back to the inside while Memphis committed turnovers on three of their first four offensive series. UAB then used a deep bench with all 11 Blazers scoring, led by 18 from Carmen Guzman, with 16 coming from Deirdre Larry off the bench. Larry was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. The Lady Tigers will return home to host UTEP, Monday, beginning at 7 p.m. Fans wearing pink to that game will receive free admission as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Memphis will then embark on a four-game C-USA road trip. -www.gotigersgo.com-
