No. 12 DePaul Knocks off Lady Tigers
Feb. 20, 2005
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The DePaul Blue Demons (23-3, 12-1 C-USA) shot 60.3 percent from the field and hit 12-for-18 attempts from three-point range in a 95-59 win over the Memphis Lady Tigers (12-14, 5-8 C-USA) in Memphis' home finale, Sunday.
Memphis jumped out to an early lead at 4-2, and the game would knot four times in the first six minutes before Allie Quigley hit a jumper to give DePaul a lead it would never relinquish at the 14:08 mark. The Blue Demons then used a 14-1 run to put the lead in double-digits as the Lady Tiger offense struggled, missing five jump shots during that run and not breaking the double-digit point mark until the 7:38 mark in the first half when Kaneshi Hart dropped in a lay-up to cut the lead to 24-11. But as they would for the remainder of the afternoon, the Blue Demons would release the shooters from the outside as Dant hit a pair of threes, followed by one from Jenna Rubino. DePaul would go 7-for-11 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes, answering Lady Tiger buckets with threes on the other end. Jenni Dant scored 14 of her points in the opening half, including a 4-for-5 stretch from three-point land, while Jenna Rubino added 12. Only four Lady Tigers scored in the opening 20 minutes, led by nine from Victoria Crawford, as Memphis was 10-for-26 from the floor in the opening half (38.5 percent).
After trailing 45-23 at the half, the Lady Tigers came out with a line-up featuring freshmen Marie Reid and Jessica Hall to start the second half. The duo answered immediately with a Hall jumper off a feed from Reid to cut the lead to 20, but the Blue Demons would keep the Lady Tigers at bay, and 20 points away, until Victoria Crawford hit a lay-up followed by a pair of Jennifer Sullivan free-throws to cut the lead to 18 at 69-51. Allie Quigley would hit a three to put Memphis back at bay 21 points back on the next possession, and the Lady Tigers would answer back with a three from junior guard Tamika Butler to again pull within 18 at 72-54, but that's the last the Lady Tigers would see of DePaul as the Blue Demons finished the game on a 23-5 run.
Crawford would lead Memphis with 20 points, while Hart added a career-high 11 points on senior night. Raven Rogers hit the 600 career rebounding mark with seven rebounds, giving her 603 for her career with one regular season game remaining.
Five Blue Demons scored double-digits as the league's leading offense fell just short of the triple-digit mark. Quigley finished with 22 points, while Rubino added 16. Khara Smith finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Caprice Smtih added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Memphis will complete its regular season at Saint Louis, Friday, while DePaul hosts Marquette in its regular-season finale. With the Memphis win, DePaul clinches its second C-USA regular season title.
Both teams will head to Charlotte, Mar. 3-6th for the Conference USA Championships.
