Lady Tigers Close Out Regular Season With Loss
Feb. 24, 2007
HOUSTON, Texas - It was too much of the Rice Owls on senior night as Memphis fell 76-49 to close out the regular season, Saturday. The Lady Tigers will find out Sunday who they will play in the first round of the Conference USA Women's Basketball Championships presented by Aeropostale.
"Rice did a good job of forcing us out of what we do best," Head Coach Blair Savage-Lansden said. "We got frustrated. Our energy was disappointing. We talked about pride at halftime and regardless of how good it's going or how bad it's going, your character is revealed in your actions. I don't understand our mentality. I don't know how to teach pride to them."
Memphis trailed 44-17 at the half after committing 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, nine of them being travel calls and one being a double-dribble call. Rice doubled up Memphis on the boards 26-13 in the opening 20 minutes and the presence of 6-2 Lauren Neaves and 6-4 Valeriya Berezhynska forced the Lady Tigers out to the wings, where the more athletic Rice guards harassed the Lady Tigers in to quick shots and took away driving lanes. While Memphis was battling through the pressure, they suffered through a 12:11 scoring drought from the field.
For the game, Memphis was outworked 50-32 on the glass and gave up 40 points in the paint and 21 points off turnovers. Ashley Thornton was the lone Lady Tiger to score double-digits, finishing with 12 points and adding six rebounds, while Se'erra Fantroy added nine points.
Four different Owls scored double-digits, led by 21 points from Kadie Riverin. Lauren Neaves added 17 points, while Valeriy Berezhynska added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while getting to play more minutes with the game firmly in hand.
Memphis now awaits the release of the Conference USA Tournament bracket, which will be released Sunday, to find out who the Lady Tigers will play in the first round of the tournament, which begins, Mar. 1st.
