Nov. 12, 2003
Memphis, Tenn. - Forward Jordie Soso tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds leading the University of Memphis women's basketball team to a 70-50 victory over Christian Brothers University in exhibition action Wednesday at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Soso had eight points and 10 rebounds in the opening half as the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 43-19 lead at the break. Soso nearly outrebounded the entire Lady Bucs squad in the first 20 minutes as Memphis held a 24-11 advantage on the boards.
Sophomore Tamika Butler had eight points during a 17-5 run midway through the first half that pushed the Memphis lead to 23-9. Butler finished with nine points and a game-high six assists.
A smothering Memphis defense held CBU to just two field goals in the opening 12 minutes as the visitors made just 7-of-25 attempts from the field in the first half. The Lady Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor including a 5-for-10 effort from three-point range. True freshman Ashley Dixon nailed both of her attempts from behind the arc.
The Lady Bucs outscored Memphis 31-29 in the second half primarily due to improved shooting from the field, but their struggles from the free throw line prevented any legitimate chance at a comeback. CBU hit 12-of-26 field goal attempts after the break and made just 4-of-12 free throws. For the game, CBU made just 9-of-20 from the charity stripe while Memphis was 4-for-6.
Memphis guard Princess Swilley was the only other Lady Tiger in double figures finishing with 10 points. Jennifer Sullivan had eight points and eight rebounds in the contest. CBU senior Tamika Rogers and reserve forward Leah Hetzler each had 10 points for the Lady Bucs.
The Lady Tigers open their regular season, Friday, Nov. 21 vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore with tipoff set for 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
