The University of Memphis women's basketball team (5-6) was out-rebounded 44-36, including 16 offensive boards, and was forced in to 27 turnovers in an 84-45 loss to UT Arlington (4-5) at the opening round of the Sunsplash Shootout in the Bahamas, Thursday. The loss drops the Tigers in to the consolation game, where they will face Winthrop at noon (ET), Saturday.
Memphis tied the game at 9-9 off a layup from Ashley Thornton at the 14:21 mark, but UT Arlington used a 19-2 run to blow the lead to 28-11 with 5:51 to play and for the third straight game, the Tigers had dug themselves a deep first half hole that proved insurmountable.
Four different Mavericks scored double-digits, including Candice Champion, who shot 8-of-12 for 23 points, adding nine rebounds, while Kristina Grace stepped in off the bench to score 14 points with eight rebounds, including an 8-for-8 stint from the line.
Memphis had just two players in double-digit scoring after shooting 15-for-54 from the field. Tehani Goldsmith led Memphis with 11 points, including a pair of three-point field goals, while Shekeira Copeland scored 10 points with three rebounds in her first career start. The Tigers' top three scorers were held to a combined 12 points, as leading scorer Paris Leonard managed just four points. Ashley Thornton had eight points and six rebounds, and Ramses Lonlack was held scoreless for the first time in her Tiger career.
Memphis will have Friday to practice, then will face off against Winthrop, who lost to No. 25 Georgia Tech in the opening round, Saturday, at noon (ET).
