Memphis' Top Two Scorers Held in Single Digits
For the second time this season, Memphis' top two scorers were held to the single digits. Leading scorer Devin Necaise was held to six points, while Paris Leonard scored nine. It was the first time in seven games that Necaise hasn't hit double-digits and was her lowest point total since Dec. 29th when Memphis played ranked Georgia in the FedExForum. Leonard has hit double-digits in three of the last six games after hitting double digits in six straight games to start the conference schedule. The only other time that has happened this season was the first game against UCF. In that game, Necaise scored seven points, while Leonard scored nine.
Everyone Scores and Everyone Rebounds in USM Loss
Memphis won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding USM 43-36 as all eight Lady Tigers rebounded. But shooting percentage is what did Memphis in in Hattiesburg, as USM hit 49.1 percent from the floor, while Memphis hit 29.0 percent. All eight Lady Tigers scored, led by 13 from Tamika Butler.
Howard Nabs Double-Digit Rebounds for 7th Time
Ashley Howard led all players with 10 rebounds, including five offensive at USM. It was Howard's seventh double-digit outing of the season and her second in the last three games.
Last Time Against UCF
In Memphis' first game against UCF, played in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, three Lady Tigers scored double-digits, led by 11 from Gresh Gorman and Tamika Butler. Ashley Howard rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points. Memphis shot 32.3 percent in that game, including 4-for-15 from three-point range.
One More Home Weekend Remaining on Regular Season Schedule
Memphis will round out the 2005-06 season with a pair of home games this coming weekend. Memphis will host Houston, Friday, and pre-season favorite Rice, Sunday. As of now, Rice is the No. 5 seed, and would be Memphis' first round opponent if the tournament started today.
Another Night of 30-Opponent Points in the Paint
For the third time in as many games, USM scored more than 30 points in the paint. The Golden Eagles scored 36 points in the paint. Memphis gave up 36 points in the paint at East Carolina, and 38 at Marshall. In the seven previous C-USA games Memphis has played on the road, the Lady Tigers have given up 34.5 points in the paint. Only once have the Lady Tigers kept the opponent from scoring over 30 points from the paint, that was at SMU, where SMU scored 26 points in the paint. Memphis opponents score an average of 33.3 points per game from the paint in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse during league play.
Butler Approaching Pushing for Career Top Four in Assists
Senior point guard Tamika Butler needs 35 more assists to crawl up to fourth on the career assist list. Butler has 363 career assists and 104 so far this season. Butler is also six three-point field goals shy of moving up to third in school history in career threes. She has 125 career threes and is trying to catch Kelly Herron at the 131 mark heading into the UCF game.
