Women's Basketball Releases Full 2010-2011 Schedule
Sept. 20, 2010 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's basketball revealed its entire 2010-2011 regular season schedule, including a Conference USA schedule with a new travel format, for the upcoming season, Monday. The non-conference schedule, which was released earlier this summer, includes Big 12 foes Missouri and Kansas, a road game at Big 10 opponent Indiana and a home game against 2010 NCAA participant UALR. "We are excited about challenging our Big 12 and Big Ten opponents, along with UALR," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "These teams will be some early indications of what roles some of our new players are capable of playing and just how good we can become as a team." Memphis will open its 2011 Conference USA slate on Jan. 6th with a home game against Marshall, then will travel to East Carolina on Jan. 9th to face the Pirates in a difficult first C-USA road game. That tandem of opponents used to be one road trip for Memphis, but the C-USA women's basketball coaches decided over the spring to move away from the travel partner format, meaning shorter C-USA road trips, and hopefully less wear and tear from long weekends of travel. "Our retooled C-USA schedule should reduce the taxing, lengthy road trips," McFerrin said. "We will experience shorter trips with more recovery and preparation time." Memphis will have back-to-back conference road games just twice during the season. The first one will be road games at Houston (Jan. 23) and Marshall (Jan. 27th), but will feature three days between games. The second will be Feb. 17 at Southern Miss and Feb. 20th at Tulane. The new C-USA schedule means the game days move to Thursdays and Sundays. Memphis will play league home games for three straight Thursdays during the month of January, and will play three road games on Sundays during the same month. The schedule will flip in February, with the Tigers playing three of four Sundays at home, and playing two road games on Thursdays, with Feb. 10th serving as the team's open date.
