MEMPHIS, TENN. - Twelve games against teams that played in postseason last year, including NCAA Tournament participants Tennessee, Tulane, Tennessee Tech, Rice, UAB, Mississippi State and Marquette, highlight the 2000-01 University of Memphis Lady Tiger basketball schedule.

"Once again, I think we have done a great job with the quality of our pre-season schedule," said coach Joye Lee-McNelis. " I believe that any time you have the opportunity to play a very tough schedule, it will give your team valuable experience to take on the people in your league."

The Lady Tigers will play two exhibition games prior to opening the regular season against the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks on Nov. 18 at The Pyramid. Memphis will host the Basketball Travelers on Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m. and Christian Brothers on Nov. 13. Both exhibition meetings will be played at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Following the exhibition games, Memphis will face two tough SEC foes in Arkansas (Nov. 18) and Mississippi State on Nov. 21. The Lady Bulldogs saw action in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year following the 1999-2000 campaign and return sophomore all-America candidate LaToya Thomas to the squad that finished last year with a 24-8 record. The Lady Razorbacks ended the 1999-2000 season with a 17-15 record and a fourth-place showing in the post-season WNIT tournament.

The Lady Tigers will compete in two tournaments this year, including the Lady Tiger Classic and the Rice University Tournament. Memphis will open the Lady Tiger Classic on Nov. 24 against Tennessee State and could face either Texas A&M or Northwestern State the following day in the championship or consolation game. Memphis has won the last eight straight Lady Tiger Classics and owns an impressive 66-13 record in the last six years at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Lady Tigers open the Rice Tournament with Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 1 and will face either Iona College or Rice in the second day of the tournament.

Following the Rice tournament, Memphis will face five non-conference opponents, including SEC foes Alabama (Dec. 6) and Tennessee (Dec. 15) before opening the Conference USA season with UAB on New Year's Eve. Four of the five non-league games are on the road including, Alabama, UALR (Dec. 9), Tennessee and UMKC (Dec. 20). Memphis will host Tennessee Tech on Dec. 29 before traveling to Birmingham to take on the Lady Blazers. The Lady Tigers have opened the last three straight C-USA seasons with victories over UAB, including a 65-64 win last season on the road.

Memphis will continue its traditional home-and-away series with C-USA National Division opponents UAB (Dec. 31, Jan. 14), Tulane (Jan. 19, Feb. 16), Southern Miss (Jan. 21, Feb. 18), Houston (Jan. 26, Feb. 23) and South Florida (Jan. 28, Feb. 25) while hosting American Division foes Saint Louis (Feb. 9) and Charlotte (Feb. 11). The Lady Tigers will also travel to Cincinnati (Feb. 4) and Louisville (Feb. 2). The C-USA Tournament will be hosted on March 2-5 by Marquette University.

The Lady Tigers hope to make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in celebration of coach Joye Lee-McNelis' 10th years at the helm of the program. McNelis carries a 167-101 record into her 10th season, and has guided her squads to post-season tournament appearances in the last six seasons. Memphis has played in the NCAA Tournament four times, and in the WNIT twice. Last year, Memphis' preseason schedule, which included four of the same teams that they will face this year, ranked as the fifth toughest schedule in the country. Memphis also returns four starters from last year's squad, including senior all-America candidate Tiffany Adkins, senior Tiffany Collins, junior Malissa Bush and junior Melissa Abraham.
