Lin Dunn, the head coach of the WNBA Indiana Fever, will be in Memphis on Saturday, October 24, and will be one of the presenting teachers for the Melissa McFerrin Hoops School Coaches' Clinic at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Dunn guided the Fever to the WNBA Finals earlier this month, where they took eventual champion Phoenix to a deciding fifth game before falling 3-2.
A native of Dresden, Tenn., Dunn has guided teams to the NCAA tournament seven different times, including a Final Four appearance with Purdue in 1994. She is in the Athletics Hall of Fame at both Austin Peay and Miami and is the leading coach in school history at three of the four NCAA schools she coached at (Austin Peay, Miami, and Purdue).
At Purdue, Dunn guided teams to three Big Ten conference titles, helping Purdue to seven NCAA tournaments, four Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Final Four appearance. She also recruited and coached three Kodak All-Americans, three Big Ten Players of the Year, two Big Ten Athletes of the Year and future WNBA stars such as Summer Erb, Ukari Figgs, Stacey Lovelace, Michelle VanGorp and Stephanie White before joining the pro game in 1996 as the head coach of the American Basketball League's (ABL) Portland Power.
The all-day clinic is just $25 per individual coach and $50 for a coaching staff of three or $75 for a coaching staff of four. Also teaching at the day's clinic will be WNBA Seattle Storm assistant coach Nancy Darsch and Union University head coach Mark Campbell. Darsch's Storm squad also appeared in the WNBA playoffs as the No. 3 seed from the West, while Campbell has guided Union to three NAIA Division I National Championships in the past five seasons. Tiger head coach Melissa McFerrin will also present a session at the clinic, which includes lunch and a practice session for the University of Memphis women's basketball team.
The clinic will open with registration and breakfast from 8:30-9:15 a.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Following introductions, Campbell will be the first coach presenting at the clinic, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Darsch will follow Campbell's presentation from 10:30-11:30 a.m., then lunch will be provided from 11:30-12:30.
