Brittany Carter Named Pre-Season All-Conference
Oct. 14, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - -
Junior guard Brittany Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County HS) was named to the Conference USA Pre-Season All-Conference Team it was announced Thursday by the league office. The 2010 C-USA Newcomer of the Year and a first team all-conference honoree last year, Carter led the league in scoring with 19.2 ppg. She also ranked 19th in the country in scoring, despite being the only Tiger to average double-digit points last year.
"Brittany established herself among the best players in C-USA last season as a sophomore," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "Her impact was felt immediately, not only on our team, but also within our league. Brittany will begin this season as a known player, and her challenge will be to elevate her game even further. She is a player that is capable and willing of doing that."
Carter is the first Tiger named to the C-USA Pre-Season squad since Tiffany Adkins earned a pre-season nod in the 2000-2001 poll.
A redshirt junior, Carter was one of just two players on the six-member squad that was not a returning senior. UAB sophomore guard Jala Harris was the other underclassman honored Thursday.
Carter's 654 points last year was the most-ever for a Memphis sophomore and puts her just 346 points away from the 1,000-point mark in just 34 games played. She also made school history with a 49-point game in a win over Sacramento State at the University of Washington tournament last year. That game broke both the men's and women's single-game scoring records at Memphis, and broke the C-USA women's single game scoring record as well. In all, Carter had three 30-plus point games and had 20 or more points in 15 games.
She was named to the University of Washington and Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) All-Tournament Teams and will be one of eight returning players, six of whom had starting experience last season, for the Tigers this season.
The team has already kicked off practice and will be introduced to the public as part of Memphis Madness festivities at FedExForum, Friday. The team will host an open practice at FEF beginning at 6:30 p.m., when the doors open. The team will then be introduced to the fans at approximately 7:25 p.m.
The Tigers' only exhibition game will be a November 7th 2 p.m. game against Christian Brothers at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Season tickets remain available by calling the Tiger Ticket Office at 901-678-2331 or by purchasing them online here:
