ATLANTA - - Senior guard Brittany Carter was named to the Women's Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List Wednesday. Carter, the C-USA pre-season player of the year, is currently Memphis' leading scorer with 15.5 points per game and ranks in the top 10 in Conference USA statistics in scoring, assists, blocked shots, three-point field goals made and assist/turnover ratio.

The Covington, Ga., native is a two-time first team All-C-USA player and becomes the first Tiger to make the Naismith Trophy Award watch list under head coach Melissa McFerrin. Carter currently holds the University of Memphis single game scoring record (male or female) and currently ranks 17th in career scoring at Memphis with 1,147 points.

Carter is also a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She was one of 30 candidates on the national list for the award given to seniors in their final year of eligibility.

The Naismith Trophy Watch List is made up of the top women's college basketball players from 35 schools around the country. The list is compiled annually by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which selects players based on player performances and expectations for the 2012 season. The 2012 Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Denver. In all, 51 student-athletes were selected to this season's Early Season Watch List. Carter is the lone representative from a Conference USA school on the list and is one of four players from the state of Tennessee on the list.

Carter and the Tigers have two home games remaining in a five-game home stretch. Memphis hosts Tennessee State Thursday at 7 p.m. and NCAA tournament team UT Martin Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game against UT Martin is the first of four straight games against teams from the 2011 NCAA tournament field for the Tigers (Dec. 4 vs. UT Martin, Dec. 10 at UALR, Dec. 17 vs. Louisiana Tech and Dec. 18 either at St. John's or vs. Prairie View A&M).
