Team Effort Ties Lady Tigers For 10th

Senior Marissa Steen (15th) and junior Alex Aläng (28th) paced the Lady Tigers' individual performances.

In her fourth season at the helm of the University of Memphis women's golf team, Beth Harrelson continues to build the program into a national force.

The 2010-11 campaign was a season of unprecedented success for the Lady Tiger golf program. For the first time since the 1996-97 season, the Lady Tigers won three events (Bobcat Invitational; UAB Fall Beach Blast; Lady Eagle Invitational).

Junior Marissa Steen claimed medalist honors in each of the three events the team won, and set a new single-season scoring record with an average of 73.97 strokes per round. Steen was awarded C-USA Golfer of the Week honors three times during the season, and was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team after finishing second at the C-USA Championship. She was also named First Team All-Conference USA. The Lady Tigers wrapped up the season with a fourth-place team finish at the C-USA Championship behind a 54-hole team score of 911.

In the fall of 2009, Harrelson welcomed three newcomers after losing just one returnee. After struggling to a 14th place finish in the season opening Lady Paladin Invitational, Harrelson has led the Lady Tigers to three top-5 finishes. After posting back to back third place finishes at the Lady Red Wolf Classic and the CSU Wendy's Invitational, Memphis finally broke through to win the UAB Fall Beach Blast. Led by freshman Sarah Mathews' rounds of 74-73, the Lady Tigers posted team totals of 300-295 (the lowest two team scores under Harrelson) to capture the first victory under Harrelson and the first for the program since 2007.

Harrelson and the Lady Tigers continued to play well in the spring, claiming their second title of the season at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational. Marissa Steen claimed medalist honors in the event, becoming the first player to medal under Coach Harrelson. It was the first time the women's golf program has won two or more tournaments in the same season since 1996-97, when they won the Memphis Women's Invitational, the Lady Panther Invitational, and the Conference USA Championship. The Lady Tigers also had a strong showing at the 2010 C-USA Women's Golf Championship, posting a season-low tournament total of 895 and finishing fourth.

After taking over a program that only had four returning scholarship players in August of 2008, Harrelson led the 2008-09 Lady Tigers to four top-10 team finishes. Harrelson worked on laying the solid foundation for future success of the women's golf program.

A graduate of Briarcrest High School, Harrelson signed a volleyball scholarship with the University of Alabama before to declining to attend the U of M. She arrived on campus in 1982 and played for Coach Diane Hale during the fall season. After redshirting for a year, she made the transition to golf in 1984 and received the team's Most Improved Player award following the 1984-85 season. As a senior, Harrelson was selected as captain of her team and posted the team's lowest scoring average.

After graduating with a Journalism degree, Harrelson participated on the Futures Tour for two years before moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., to work as an assistant professional at the TPC of Scottsdale during the winter and at Stonebridge Golf Club during the remainder of the year.

In 1987, the talented player won the Memphis area Women's Golf Association tournament and the Double Eagle Golf Tournament. She was also the medalist in the 1988 Tennessee State Tournament.

She returned to Memphis permanently in 1990 and accepted as full-time position as the assistant pro at Stonebridge Golf Club. She became the golf instructor at Stonebridge in 1991 and held that position until 1998 when she moved to Quail Ridge Golf Club in Bartlett as the golf instructor. While working at Stonebridge Golf Club, she earned her PGA Class A membership into the Professional Golfers Association in 1995.

Prior to being named head coach of the Lady Tigers, Harrelson was an instructor at Memphis National Golf Club, as well as the head coach of St. Mary's High School.
