Memphis Posts 302 in First Round of UCF Challenge

First Round Results in PDF Format SORRENTO, Fla. — Paced by a one-over-par 73 from Kathleen Glavin, the University of Memphis women’s golf team posted a 302 (+14) total in the first round of the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club. The Lady Tigers are currently in a tie for 15th position with the University of Texas – San Antonio and are just eight stroked out of the top-10, while Glavin is in a tie for 24th individually. Julia Hodgson and Alex Aläng are tied for 60th after posting opening round 76’s (+4). “I’m pleased with the play today,” Lady Tiger head coach Beth Harrelson said. “I certainly think we will improve tomorrow and move up in this extremely tough field.” Nine teams that competed in the 2010 NCAA Regionals are in the field this week, including 2010 C-USA Champion Tulane. The Green Wave posted a team total of 284 (-4) Sunday to take a one stroke lead over Coastal Carolina (285). The Knights are two strokes back in third after turning in a two-under-par team total of 286. Ashleigh Albrecht (Ketucky) and Jessica Alexander (Coastal Carolina) each posted six-under-par 66’s to grab a share of the individual lead. Ket Preamchuen (Kennesaw State) is two strokes back in third after carding an opening-round 68. This is the fifth year of the event and the fourth year at RedTail…Nine members of the 2011 field participated in the 2010 NCAA Regionals (Baylor, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia State, Illinois State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas and Tulane)…The field includes 14 teams ranked amongst the Top 100 nationally by Golfstat…The field also includes two of the Top 50 and nine of the Top 100 individual players in the country as well…Three of the past four NCAA Champions have played in the UCF Challenge during their regular seasons (Duke in 2007, USC in 2008 and Arizona State in 2009)... Duke won the 2007 and 2008 titles while UCLA won in 2009 and Texas A&M in 2010. The individual medalist has always come from the winning team (Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst in 2007, Duke’s Alison Whitaker in 2008, UCLA’s Stephanie Kono in 2009 and Texas A&M’s Julia Boland in 2010)…The rosters for the 17 schools contain student-athletes from 25 states and 15 countries.
