Preston McClellan, Undergraduate Assistant -
MIAMI LAKES, Fla.—Marissa Steen carded a career-low 69 in the second round of the Hurricane Invitational to lead Memphis and claim a share of third place individually heading into the final round. Memphis carded a 307 team total in round two at the Don Shula Golf Resort in order to climb one spot and move into a tie for 13th on the leaderboard. Memphis (313-307) is tied with Charleston Southern (315-305) and is only nine strokes out of the top eight. Steen’s three-under-par total is tied for the seventh lowest single round individual total in school history. With opening rounds of 76-69, she is just two shots back of first and second round leader Christine Wong (69-74). “I’m excited for Marissa,” said Lady Tiger head coach Beth Harrelson. “She flat out played solid golf today—15 pars, three birdies and no bogies—that’s impressive golf.” Sarah Mathews (83-75) and Alex Aläng (75-83) are in a tie for 60th with two day totals of 158. Julia Hodgson (79-81) and Leslie Grabeman (84-82) sit in 67th and 79th places, respectively. First round leader Christine Wong (San Diego State) maintained her advantage by carding a second round 74. She leads Cathrine Madsen (Georgia State), who is currently at even par for the tournament after posting rounds of 74-70, by one stroke. Marissa Steen (76-69) is tied with Aruka Felgueroso (72-73) for third position. The Hurricane Invitational concludes tomorrow with the playing of the third round. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 am (ET).
