Women's Golf Tied for Sixth Through First Round

PINEHURST, N.C. -- - The University of Memphis women's golf team opened its 2003 spring schedule with an opening round 321, Friday, placing them in a tie for sixth with host College of Charleston at the Edwin Watts/Carolinas Classic tournament, Friday. Junior Jennifer Jaszek (Ancaster, Ontario/Ancaster), who finished sixth in the same tournament a year ago, led Memphis by firing an opening round 77, posting a 37 on the first nine of the morning. Jaszek is currently in a five-way tie for seventh place. East Carolina's Jessica Krasny leads the field after shooting 34 on the back nine and finishing with a one over par 73. UAB's Brooke Mangan is second with a two over 74, while UNC Greensboro's Jenny Gleason is third at 75. Memphis, which won the spring tournament here a year ago after shooting 311 in the opening round, will remain in action at the Edwin Watts/Carolinas Classic through Sunday. Former Lady Tiger Marianne Ruud won medallist honors at the tournament last year in a two-round event, shooting 78 and 72. Jaszek fired a pair of 76s last year to finish 6th overall and More finished tied for seventh with a 153. Jacksonville State leads the current team competition with a 309. UAB is second at 310 and East Carolina is third with a team score of 311 on the 5898-yard Pinehurst #8 course. Memphis is tied with College of Charleston for sixth with a first round 321.
Marianne Ruud is tied for 21st for Memphis after firing an opening round 79, while Abby More is tied for 47th with an opening round 82. Danielle Reilly is tied for 51st at 83, while Ava Lalancette rounds out the Lady Tiger field tied for 72nd at 85.
