Aläng, Lady Tigers Win Titles at Lady Eagle Invite

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the second time in two years, the University of Memphis women's golf team won the Lady Eagle Invitational, hosted by Southern Miss. Not only did the Lady Tigers win the team title, but Alex Aläng earned her first career win by shooting and even-par 72, winning by one stroke. As a team, the Lady Tigers posted a 306 to finish in a tie with host Southern Miss in the 16-team field. Aläng paced the Lady Tigers with her 72, making three birdies on each the front and the back nine for her first career victory. Natalie Turk and Julia Hodgson followed with scores of 77 and 78, respectively. Ashleigh Whisenant and Shelby Sain rounded out the Lady Tigers' squad, both shooting 79's. Sarah Mathews, Julia Gerlach and Ashley Kees all competed as individuals, and were led by Mathews' 80. Gerlach and Kees followed, shooting 81 and 91, respectively. Memphis posted their lowest round of the 2012-13 season, 306 to finish in a tie for first with Southern Miss. The Lady Tigers also won the team event in 2011, and Marissa Steen took home the individual title that season. Troy and UL-Monroe finished third and fourth, with scores of 311 and 315, respectively. The Lady Tigers will stay on the road as they play in the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate this weekend at Augusta State. The tournament will be played Friday-Sunday, with the teams playing one round on each day. Teams will begin teeing off at 9:00 a.m. each day.
