HATTIESBURG, Miss. -The University of Memphis women's golf team battled gusting winds and unfavorable scoring conditions to post a final-round score of 309 and win the Lady Eagle Invitational.

"It was tough out there today. Scoring conditions were less than favorable, but I'm really proud of the way the team held it together and finished strong."
Memphis head coach Beth Harrelson

The Lady Tigers, who entered the final round with a two-stroke advantage, were able to keep tournament-host and runner-up finisher Southern Miss at bay. Memphis posted a tournament total of 605 (296-309) to defeat Southern Miss (298-310) by three strokes. Troy (302-313) finished third with a 36-hole total of 615.

Just as in each of Memphis' two previous tournament titles this season, Marissa Steen led the way with medalist honors. The junior from West Chester, Ohio posted scores of 71-73--144 to beat out teammates Ashley Kees (73-74) and Kathleen Glavin (73-75), who finished second and third, respectively.

"It always feels great to win and lead your team to a title," Steen said. "I was two-under-par at the turn, so I was a little disappointed with the one-over 73, but I'm happy that I was able to close out and stay mentally strong."

Kees, who was competing as an individual, turned in the lowest finish of her career and first top-10 since finishing third at the season-opening Bobcat Invitational. Glavin's third-place showing was also the lowest of her career and the first top-10 for the junior since finishing fourth last fall at the UAB Fall Beach Blast.

Alex Aläng also finished in the top-10, carding rounds of 74-78--152 to claim a share of eighth position. Sarah Mathews (78-85--163) and Julia Hodgson (81-83--164) finished 30th and 34th, respectively.

By claiming its third win of the season, the 2010-11 Lady Tiger golf team tied the 1996-97 squad for the most tournament victories in a single season.

Memphis now has a week and a half off to prepare for the 2011 Rebel Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss. That event is scheduled for April 1-3.
