April 3, 2009
The University of Memphis women's golf team is in 13th place after one round of play at the Rebel Intercollegiate. The tournament is being played at the par-72 6, 132 yard Country Club of Oxford, with Ole Miss serving as the tournament's host. Marissa Steen set the pace for the Tigers, firing a four-over-par 76 to finish the day in a tie for eighth. Steen recorded six bogeys and four birdies on the day. "Marissa played very solid today," said Lady Tiger head coach Beth Harrelson. "She was really close on several putts, also. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see her put up another great round tomorrow." Rachel Larson recovered from a rough front nine by firing a three-over-par back nine to post an 81. She is currently in a tie for 38th. Kathleen Glavin turned in an opening round 84, good for 57th place. Leslie Grabeman (87) and Caitlin McDonald (94) are in 69th and 75th, respectively. "Rachel is really close," said Coach Harrelson. "I really think she's about to turn the corner." Memphis posted a team total of 328 on day one, good for 13th place. Tulane (300) leads the tournament after one day of play. Southern Miss (304), Ole Miss (307), Oregon State (311), and Missouri (312) round out the top-five. Daniela Holmqvist of Tulane and Dori Carter of Ole Miss are tied for individual lead after firing opening round 73's. Rebecka Nilsson of Southern Miss and Julia Potter of Missouri are tied, one stroke back in third.
