HATTIESBURG, Miss.—Alex Aläng and Julia Hodgson each carded career-low, one-over-par 72’s to lead Memphis into second place after one round at the Conference USA Women’s Golf Championship. Aläng and Hodgson, both coming off career-low finishes at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic, are tied for fifth individual after one round at Canebrake Country Club. Marissa Steen, who has posted three consecutive top-five finishes, is in a tie for 17th after posting an opening round 75. Kathleen Glavin posted a 76 in the first round and sits in a tie for 21st position. Sarah Mathews is in a tie for 42nd after turning in an 83 on day one. Memphis posted a season-low tying 295 in the opening round to gain sole possession of second place. The Lady Tigers are five strokes back of first-round leader Tulane (290). East Carolina (296), Tulsa (297), and UTEP (300) round out the top five. “The greens were really difficult out there today, but I’m proud of everyone grinding it out,” said Memphis head coach Beth Harrelson. “I love the position we’re in, and we just need to continue to grind and be patient.” The Lady Tigers are seeking to claim their first Conference USA title since 2007. That season, Memphis went on to finish 21st in the NCAA West Regional. The second round of the Conference USA Women’s Golf Championship will begin Monday, April 19 at 8 a.m. (CDT).
