Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at C-USA Championships

The University of Memphis women’s golf team posted its best round of the tournament on the final day of the Conference USA Championships, shooting a 302 to finish sixth in the team competition out of the 11 participating teams with a team score of 923 (+59). No. 20 Tulane won the C-USA title with an 877 (+13), with No. 48 East Carolina finishing second with a 904 (+40). No. 44 UCF, No. 33 SMU and Tulsa rounded out the top five. Tulsa finished nine strokes ahead of Memphis for the top five finish.
Senior Alex Aläng matched her Monday score of 75 in the final round and finished in a tie for 17th with a three-day score of 228 (+12). Sarah Mathews just missed a second top 20 finish for the Lady Tigers, posting a day three score of 78 to finish at 230 (+14) for the tournament, good enough for a tie for 22nd overall. The third senior of the Lady Tigers’ entries was Julia Hodgson, who also matched her Monday score of 77 to finish with a 232 (+16), giving her a tied for 28th-place finish.
Sophomore Ashleigh Whisenant posted her best score of the tournament in the third round, bouncing back from Tuesday’s 84 with a 73 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 31st overall with a 234 (+18). Fellow sophomore Natalie Turk also put her first two days of scores behind her and posted her best round of the tournament on Wednesday, using a 77 in the third round to finish at 251 and 50th in the individual standings.
Nico Engstroem Skaug of East Carolina won a three-golfer playoff against Gemma Dryburgh of Tulane and Felicia Espericueta of SMU to claim individual medalist honors. The three golfers finished the 54-hole, par-72 6,162-yard course with identical 220 scores.
