Three Lady Tigers in Top 17 After Second Round at Kentucky
Oct. 2, 2004
Lexington, Ky. - After the second round at the Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky, the University of Memphis women's golf team is in third place. The Lady Tigers shot a 311 after shooting a 309 in the first round and have a total score of 620. They are five strokes behind the University of Miami for second place and 19 strokes behind the tournament leading Mississippi State University. Miami had a strong second round to push them past Memphis in the standings, scoring 303 after shooting 312 on Friday. "We're being much more consistent, but we just need to make some better decisions and improve on our putting," said Memphis head coach Jenny Bruun. "We need to overcome Miami's comeback today. They are one of the top 30 teams in the nation, so I'm proud of the way our team is competing." Three U of M golfers are in the top 17 led by sophomore Meghan Mahoney who is tied for sixth place. Mahoney shot a 3-over-par 75 in the second round after scoring a 76 on Friday. Mahoney is seven strokes behind the leader, Mississippi State's Amanda Mathis. Mahoney is followed by sophomore Stacey Tate who is tied for 11th and Kathryn O'Rourke who is tied for 17th. Ashleigh Garman and Bernie Rosero also improved on their disappointing first rounds, shooting 79 and 78 respectively. "Our top three players played outstanding," Bruun said. "Their focus is awesome. I'm just proud at the way they came out knowing they did struggle in the first tournament in Alabama. They were able to put their struggles behind and concentrate on the current situation." Memphis will play the final round on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. tee time.
