Aläng Leads Lady Tigers in Round One of Mercedes Benz Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Playing in their first tournament in a couple weeks, the University of Memphis women’s golf team posted a 313 in the first round of the Mercedes Benz Women’s Intercollegiate on Friday. Alex Aläng led the Lady Tigers as she carded her best round of the season, a one-over 73. Aläng started the day on the back nine with a birdie on the par four 10th. She followed that with 16 consecutive pars before recording a double bogey on her last hole, the par four ninth. The senior carded a 35 on the back nine and 38 on the front for a total of 73. Aläng is tied for 12th place after the first round. Shelby Sain and Ashley Kees followed Aläng, shooting 78 and 79, respectively. Sain carded a pair of birdies on the back nine where she shot 38 while Kees registered two birdies on the front nine for a 39. Natalie Turk and Sarah Mathews rounded out the Lady Tigers’ squad with their scores of 83 and 85, respectively. Playing as an individual in her first collegiate event, Julia Gerlach shot 42 on the front, and followed that with a 38 on the back for a total of 80. The Lady Tigers are currently in 14th place while Penn State and Texas A&M are tied for the lead scores of 291. The second round tees off tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. central time.
