Oct. 20, 2009
CHARLESTON, S.C.—Alex Aläng fired a final round 74 to lead the University of Memphis women’s golf team to a third place finish at the Wendy’s Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern. The third place team finish is the lowest finish under second year head coach Beth Harrelson. “This is a big step forward for our team,” said Lady Tiger head coach Beth Harrelson. “I’m really proud and happy for my team. Hopefully, we can continue to ride the momentum and keep playing well.” Aläng’s rounds of 76-74 earned her an eighth place finish, the lowest of her career. Marissa Steen fired rounds of 76-77 to finish T10, her third consecutive top-10 finish. Sarah Mathews also turned in her career low finish, posting rounds of 76-70 to finish T17. After struggling to an opening round 81, Leslie Grabeman came back with a final round 75 to finish T20, her third consecutive top-20 finish. Julia Hodgson fired rounds of 86-79 to finish 45th. Coastal Carolina (301-285) fired a team total of three-under-par in the final round to overtake first round leader College of Charleston (298-307) and claim the team title. Memphis (309-305) finished third. Aruka Felgueroso (Coastal Carolina) carded rounds of 74-66, defeat Olivia Jordan-Higgins of Charleston Southern (70-75) by five strokes. Jessica Alexander of Coastal Carolina finished third with rounds of 73-74. Next up for the Lady Tigers is the UAB Beach Blast on November 2-3 in Gulf Shores, Ala. That event completes the fall portion of the schedule for Memphis.
