Oct. 22, 2013
BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Memphis women's golf team matched a school record with a 54-hole score of 892 and finished in fifth place at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club. The overall score of 892 was also posted by the 1997 team at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational.
The 2013-14 Lady Tigers shot a 294 in Tuesday's round three, posting a season-best 18-hole score for the third consecutive day.
In the last two rounds (Monday and Tuesday), Memphis shot a 592, which is tied for the fifth-best 36-hole score in school history.
Individually, Ashley Kees completed one of the best individual performances in school history with the best round of her career. In Tuesday's final round, Kees shot a 68, finishing with four birdies and no bogies. Kees' round of 68 was the best third round score in the entire field.
The 18-hole score of 68 for Kees is also tied for the third best round in school history. The last Lady Tiger to shoot a 68 or lower was Marissa Steen, who carded a 67 at the Bobcat Invitational in 2007.
For the tournament, Kees finished in 11th place with a 54-hole score of 216. That score is good enough for the sixth best 54-hole score in Memphis history.
Shelby Sain finished tied for 28th in the event, setting her career-best 54-hole score with a 225 (78-72-75 - 225). Freshman Leighann Cabush continued her strong-early season play, finishing tied for 34th (73-76-78 - 227). Cabush has finished in the top-35 in all four events this season.
Ashleigh Whisenant finished tied for 46th place (79-72-79 - 230) and Julia Gerlach finished tied for 61st (80-81-73 - 234). Gerlach matched her career-best 18-hole score of 73, meaning that all five Memphis golfers either matched or set 18-hole scoring records at this event. Gerlach's 234 was also her best 54-hole score at Memphis.
Memphis concludes the fall season next weekend, traveling to Gulf Shores, Ala. for the UAB Beach Blast at the Peninsula Golf Club. The 54-hole event begins on Monday Oct. 28.
